Privacy Policy

What we collect, what happens to your recordings (processed, then discarded), who processes your data, and your rights under Canadian privacy law.

Last updated: 2026-10-19

The short version

  • Recordings are not stored. Your speaking recording is processed to score it and then discarded. We keep the transcript and the report, for you only.
  • You can delete your reports — transcript, essay and feedback — at any time.
  • We don't sell or share your data, we don't show ads, and we never use your recordings, transcripts or essays to train AI models.
  • We follow PIPEDA, Canada's federal privacy law. Ask us anything at hello@canadianenglishtest.org.

Who we are

CanadianEnglishTest ("we", "us") is an independent CELPIP practice and Express Entry tools website at canadianenglishtest.org. We are not affiliated with Paragon Testing Enterprises, Prometric or IRCC. Our privacy contact is hello@canadianenglishtest.org.

What we collect

  1. Account details — your email address, name (if you give one) and how you sign in (email or Google). We never see your Google password.
  2. Practice data — the task and prompt you practised, the transcript of your speaking answer, the text of your essays, timing measurements (such as words per minute and pauses) and the AI feedback report.
  3. Recordings — processed during scoring only, then discarded (see below).
  4. Purchases — which plan you bought, when, and its status. Card details go directly to our payment processor; we never see or store your full card number.
  5. Technical data — your IP address is used during a request to prevent abuse. We store only a one-way hash of its network prefix that changes every day, never the address itself. We also see basic browser information.
  6. Cookies — described below.

What happens to your recordings

  • Your recording is sent over an encrypted connection to our speech-to-text and scoring providers, scored, and discarded at the end of the request. We do not keep audio on our servers.
  • We ask providers not to store it: speech-to-text requests are sent with storage turned off, and scoring with audio uses Google's paid API, which does not use the data to improve Google's products.
  • Recordings are never sent to our text-only AI provider.
  • We do not use recordings to identify you by your voice, and we do not create voiceprints.
  • If we ever ask to keep recordings to calibrate our scoring, that will be a separate, unticked opt-in that you can withdraw at any time.

How we use your information

  • To score your answers, show your reports and keep track of your AI scores and plans.
  • To prevent abuse: daily limits, one free trial per browser, one sign-up allowance per email address.
  • To process payments and refunds, and to answer your messages.
  • To understand how the site is used, through aggregate counts that contain no transcripts, essays, recordings, email addresses or IP addresses. Our analytics, where enabled, are cookie-free.

We do not sell personal information, we do not show ads, and we do not use your content to train AI models.

Consent

By submitting a recording or an essay for AI feedback, you consent to it being processed as described here. You can withdraw consent at any time by deleting your reports or your account. Some features (like AI scoring) cannot work without the processing described above.

Who processes your data

We use service providers who process data on our behalf, under contract, only to provide the service:

Your information may therefore be processed outside Canada and be subject to the laws of those countries. If you live in Quebec, we assess these transfers as required by Quebec's privacy law.

How long we keep it

  • Recordings: not kept.
  • Transcripts, essays and reports: until you delete them or close your account. Reports you created without an account are linked only to a random identifier in your browser, and that browser can delete them.
  • Abuse-prevention counters: most expire within 36 hours. Two are kept longer: a marker that the free no-sign-up trial was used (tied to the random browser identifier), and a one-way hash of your normalised email showing that its sign-up allowance was granted.
  • Purchase records: as long as tax and accounting law requires.

Cookies

  • Sign-in session — keeps you signed in.
  • cet_aid — a random, signed identifier for your free no-sign-up AI score, so the trial is used once per browser and you can open the report you created. It contains no personal details.
  • Language — remembers English or 中文.

We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.

Your rights

You can ask to see the personal information we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete it, and you can withdraw consent. Email hello@canadianenglishtest.org; we reply within 30 days. You can delete individual reports yourself at any time. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (priv.gc.ca).

Security

Data is encrypted in transit, access is limited to what is needed to run the service, and stored secrets are encrypted. If a breach creates a real risk of significant harm, we will report it to the Privacy Commissioner and notify the people affected, as PIPEDA requires.

Children

The service is meant for adults preparing for the CELPIP test. It is not directed at children under 16.

Changes

If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top. If a change affects how we use information you have already given us, we will ask for your consent again.
